RTW TRIP KOTTAYAM, INDIA DAY 98: PIT STOP TO THE BACKWATERS OF KERALA

Our next stop was to head to the backwaters of Alleppey.  Since Fort Kochi to Allepey was quite a bit to travel in one day, we broke it up by staying in Kottayam for the night.  We had to take a rickshaw, then a ferry to Ernakulum, then another tuktuk to the bus terminal, then a bus to Kottayam.  In a way, we were glad we arrived late in the day, as there really wasn’t anything in Kottayam  We just had a bite and had some shut eye.

If you end up in Kottayam, Hotel Ambassador was a good option.  There are only a few hotels here, so if you didn’t reserve anything like us, you can show up at the rather large Ambassador Hotel.  They didn’t have any doubles when we arrived and only had a family room which cost more money, but it was still really cheap.

Hotel Ambassador - Huge family room for just us!

The room was large, with a couple double beds, a fan, a TV, and ensuite bathroom.  There is a restaurant downstairs in the hotel called Log Cabin, which seemed to evoke the feeling of Twin Peaks.  It was eerie, empty, with party decorations that looked like they have been up since the 80s.  Waiters in vests served our mediocre food.

Log Cabin Restaurant: My water looked like vodka, and there were maraschino cherries on my sandwich!?! Even the food was very 80s.

Hotel Ambassador also has a bakery downstairs, so grab a few pastries as they were tasty and cheap.

As Lonely Planet suggested, Meenachi Restaurant was a good option for dinner.  Other patrons seemed to be middle class Indians, and the place had a bit of charm.  The food was good too!  If you want to eat at a different restaurant, good luck finding one!
